Types of Autism

autism typesSince my son understand what I said and has good memory of numbers, letters, shapes, etc. I assume that if my son is autistic he is on the mild cases.  So, I searched on different types of autism and want to know what is best fit for him. The only difficulty for my son is that he is only limited eye contact, not able to follow simple instruction, not communicate with us, not responding to his name, and other repetitive behaviors and slight sensory issues.

Let us know the different types of autism spectrum disorder:

  1. Classic Autism also known as Autistic Disorder
    A child with classic autism is characterized by impairment in social interactions and communication and has some restrictive and repetitive behaviors.
  2. Asperger Syndrome
    Children falls in this category are good in verbal but have difficulties in terms of social skills.  Asperger kids often have average or above average intelligence but they have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and other condition, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They also hard time to express their feeling and understand gestures, facial expression and tone of voice.
  3. Mild Autism
    Mild autism means that a child may have strong verbal skills and academic excellence but have few behavioral issues and problems with communication skills.
  4. Severe Autism or Low Functioning Autism
    This includes a child or individual with the most significant symptoms on the Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Person with severe autism needs a deal of support because most probably they will not be able to use spoken language, low IQ’s, sensory dysfunction, repetitive behaviors and self-stimulatory behaviors and sometimes they have aggressive behaviors and have physical symptoms including epilepsy, mood disorder, sleeplessness and gastrointestinal issues.
  5. PDD-NOS
    PDD-NOS stands for Pervasive Development Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. PPD-NOS diagnosis means that your child is “on the spectrum” but does not fit to any existing specific categories of autism. A child within this category has autistic behavior but does not fit into other categories. According to National Institute of Health, Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD) refers to the group of disorders characterized by delays in the development of socialization and communication skill and they have limited scope of interest.
  6. High Functioning Autism
    There are similarities between High Functioning Autism and Asperger Syndrome. Individual with High Functioning autism (HFA) has speech delays while Asperger Syndrome individual have normal speech but both High Functioning autism and Asperger syndrome have average or above intelligence but struggles with the issues of social interaction and communication.
  7. Rett Syndrome
    Rett Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects girls almost exclusively.  Person with rett syndrome have normal early growth and development followed by a slowing of development because it affects the way the brain develops which cause them not to use muscles for eye and body movements and speech.
