Difference between Developmental Delays and Learning Issues

learning-issues-development-delayOccasionally a developmental delay is also a sign of learning issues. Developmental delay may be a sign of genetic disorder or medical condition. Some kids with developmental delays will eventually catch up and no longer have any developmental difficulties.

Developmental delays is that a child is not meeting developmental milestones at the expected age. While learning issues or learning disabilities that a child’s academic achievement is lower than expected for developmental lever, age or grade level.

One main differences between developmental delays and learning issues is that children with learning issues do not outgrow even though they have all support and treatments like for instance an adults who have dyslexia continue to have a hard time with spelling even though he graduated from school.

Developmental delays can be diagnosed as early as 12 months when a parents notice that his child is left behind from the children of the same age but learning issues usually diagnosed at least 5 years of age or older because they struggles in certain areas in school.

Children needs to evaluate if they struggle in school so that doctor may describe the area and severity of delay and help them recommend the appropriate therapies.  Children with either developmental delays or learning issues can benefit from intervention programs and therapies to address their areas of need.
