Our child’s occupational therapist mention about motor planning. I searched to the internet and read some reading material about motor planning tips to improve our son’s condition. By the way, he is diagnosed as having Global Development Delay Ruled out Autism and he began having early intervention. His occupational therapist mention to us that he has having motor planning disorder.
An individual with motor planning disorder is often find it difficult to learn physical movements and adapt them to different situation even when the movements are learned and he often executed without confidence or coordination.
Here are some tips to improve motor planning:
- It is useful to engage your child a play games that involve imitation in order for a child to plan actions based on watching and copying peer. Sample games is follow the leader game such as “Simon says” or sings “Hokey Pokey.”
- Make your child participate in activities that involve climbing over, under and around large objects. Like for instance are playing on playground equipment or coping with obstacle courses to help your child basic skills or knowledge of ow to move his body through space.
- Make your child to come with an idea for a new activity or new way to play with a toy to promote motor planning.
- Organize activities that are composed of a series of steps including making a craft, making sandwich or creating obstacle course. In this way, your child build his self-esteem.
- Knows what aspects of motor planning that strengthen your child such as following verbal directions or coming up with ideas.
