Self-Regulation is the ability to manage emotions, thoughts and behavior in the way that is acceptable and produce positive results. It is how to deal with frustrations, stressors and anxiety. It includes being able to resist highly emotional reaction, to calm yourself down when get upset and to handle frustrations without an outburst. It is the skill needed as get matured to direct own behavior towards a goal despite of hindrances and own feelings.
In order to have self-regulation, one must develop the skill to required self-awareness, emotional intelligence, filtering of sensory stimulation, effectively coping with stress, relating well to others, and staying focus.
Kids with autism and ADHD may have difficult to have self-regulation so it is important to teach them to control their emotions and resist impulsive behaviors. These kids should learn to handle strong reactions and find ways to express their feelings or emotions than having meltdowns or throwing tantrums.
Some kids struggle with self-regulation due to the combination of character and learned behavior. Some babies having a hard time to self-soothing, and get very distressed when taking a bath or changing clothes. These babies may likely trouble with emotional self-regulation. Example of learned behavior, when parents always rescue their kids in times if they see that their kids is very upset. These children will throw tantrums in order to get what they want.
